Stem cells are known for possessing two qualities: self-renewal and differentiation. However, with aging, sadly these qualities decline. Aged stem cells cannot replenish themselves with more stem cells, resulting in a depletion of stem cells reserves and reduced capacity to generate different blood cells. This can in turn lead to disorders such as anemia, clotting deficiencies, and compromised immune system functions. On one hand, The stem cells can also suffer from an imbalance in their differentiation responses in which some types of white blood cells are produced in excess resulting in chronic inflammation while others that protect the body from infections are produced too little which ultimately increases risk of infection.
